Course Details for
Fishing Master Certificate of Service & Fishing Master Class IV
 
 
Every Person serving as Master (Captain) of a Canadian Fishing Vessel between 60 and 100 tons gross tons is required, under the Canada Shipping Act - Canadian Certificate Regulations, to hold a Fishing Master Certificate of Service or Fishing Master Class IV certificate of Competency.

It is the stated intention of Transport Canada that all Masters of vessels over 15 gross tons will be required to hold this certificate within the foreseeable future.
 
Training Masters and Mates
29. (1) Subject to subsection (5), every ship that is engaged on a voyage shall have on board and employ
   (a) a master; ......
   (3) Subject to subsection (5), every person who is employed in the capacity set out in any of columns 1 to 3 of an item of Table 2 to this section on board a fishing vessel that is engaged on a voyage referred to in the heading of the column shall hold, at a minimum, the certificate set out in column 4 of that item that is appropriate to the duties of the person on the fishing vessel.

Maritime Education Associate's schedule provides the complete training package for the Fishing Master IV and the Certificate of Service as a Master of a Fishing Vessel between 60 and 100 tons.

The program includes:
a. Fishing Master IV or Certificate of Service as a Master of a Fishing Vessel between 60 and 100 tons
b. Marine Emergency Duties A1 (MED A1 & A2)
c. Restricted Operator Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
d. Maritime First Aid

Attendance
Learners completing a required pre-course reading assignment and attending a minimum of 80 hours will be awarded a Transport Canada EXN 24 Training Certificate. Fishing Master courses will have a maximum of 16 persons in all practical components of the course.

Candidates for the Fishing Master IV and the Certificate of Service as a Master of a Fishing Vessel between 60 and 100 tons must have their seaservice confirmed by Transport Canada before enrolling in the program. Training Certificates will only be issued to those candidates who have approved sea service.
Candidates should also possess:
a) Medical Certificate from an accredited Transport Canada doctor.
b) Proof of Sea service as in #4 above.
