Published with the Regulations to the Canada Shipping Act 2001 is a new Fishing Certificate, the Fishing Master Certificate of Service to 60 gross tons. This has some similarity to the previous certificate of service to 100 gross tons and has a sunset clause built into it. Those persons who have 1 year (365 days) of sea service on a fishing vessel LESS that 60 gross tons as Master in the 10 years before the coming into force of the regulation, may apply for the new certificate. Effectively you will have about 8 years or up to 2015 to obtain this certificate. After that you will require a Fishing Master 4. Candidates will have to acquire:
- Seafarers medical examination
- Marine Emergency Duty A1 certificate (MED A1)
- Restricted Operator Certificate - Maritime Commercial (ROC-MC)
- Small Vessel Operators Proficiency Certificate (SVOPC)
- Simulated Electronic Navigation - Limited (SEN-LTD)
- Pass and oral examination with a Transport Canada examiner.
The actual oral examination and issuance of the Certificate must wait until the coming into force of the act. |
